Letter to the Editor A model for the binary pulsar radio eclipse

چکیده
A problem of the binary pulsar radio eclipses is considered. Recent theoretical work concerning this problem is discussed and a plasma mechanism of radio eclipses in the PSR B1957+20 binary system is presented. The companion star is assumed tobe adegeneratewhite dwarfwith nearly dipolarmagnetosphere filled with relativistic particles of the pulsar wind. It is argued that radio waves are strongly damped in the companion’s magnetosphere due to the cyclotron resonance with particles of the electron-positron plasma. The large, stable, continuous and frequency-dependent eclipses should occur as a result of this process, which agrees well with observations. Possible mechanisms of generation of the optical and high-energy emission are also suggested in the framework of the presentedmodel.

Binary radio pulsar system J0737−3039 provides an exceptional opportunity to study innermost structure of pulsar magnetospheres due to very tight orbit, favorable directions of pulsars' rotation and magnetic axes and extremely fortuitous orientation of the orbit. In this system the millisecond pulsar A is eclipsed once per orbit. During eclipse a clear modulation at the 2.77 s period of pulsar ...

We present a model for pulsar radio eclipses in some binary systems, and test this model for PSRs B1957 + 20 and J2051− 0827. We suggest that in these binaries the companion stars are degenerate dwarfs with strong surface magnetic fields. The magnetospheres of these stars are permanently infused by the relativistic particles of the pulsar wind. We argue that the radio waves emitted by the pulsa...

We consider magnetohydrodynamical interaction between relativistic pulsar wind and static magnetosphere in binary pulsar system PSR J0737-3039. We construct semi-analytical model describing the form of the interface separating the two pulsars. An assumption of vacuum dipole spin down for Pulsar B leads to eclipse duration ten times longer than observed. Electromagnetic torque on Pulsar B is, in...
متن کاملGreen Bank Telescope Observations of the Eclipse of Pulsar “ A ” in the Double Pulsar Binary PSR J 0737 − 3039
We report on the first Green Bank Telescope observations at 427, 820 and 1400 MHz of the newly discovered, highly inclined and relativistic double pulsar binary. We focus on the brief eclipse of PSR J0737−3039A, the faster pulsar, when it passes behind PSR J0737−3039B. We measure a frequency-averaged eclipse duration of 26.6 ± 0.6 s, or 0.00301 ± 0.00008 in orbital phase. The eclipse duration i...
